Albuera, Leyte Mayor Rolando Espinosa Sr. was killed after allegedly resisting arrest at the Baybay, Leyte Sub-Provincial Jail, early Saturday morning.

Albuera, Leyte Police Chief Juvy Espinido said Espinosa, along with detainee Raul Yap, were killed at past 4 a.m. after an alleged gun-grabbing attempt, Radyo Inquirer 990 reported.

Espinido said Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) officers went to the prison to serve a warrant of arrest for illegal possession of firearms, when the two allegedly resisted.

Espinosa was earlier charged with possession of drugs and unlicensed firearms after a raid on his house yielded at least 11.5 kg of “shabu” and several firearms and ammunition.

He had previously sought protective police custody for fear of his life after he and his son, Kerwin, were tagged as among Eastern Visayas’ biggest drug lords.

The younger Espinosa was arrested in Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates and remains under UAE custody while authorities there investigate whether he had been involved in illegal activity in the country. CDG

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines) — Albuera Mayor Rolando Espinosa, one of the government officials linked by President Rodrigo Duterte to the illegal drug trade, was killed inside the Baybay City Provincial Jail in Leyte early Saturday.

Leyte Chief of Police Chief Insp. Jovie Espenido confirmed Espinosa's death to CNN Philippines. But he said details are still sketchy.

According to the initial spot report, authorities from the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) served a search warrant against Espinosa and one other inmate, Raul Yap, which "resulted in" their deaths.
