This is a true to life story of WW2 hero Dawson Doss. He is a concientious objector. Meaning he doesn't want to kill even if he was in the military. So he had to face bullying and he was ostracized by the army. His superiors just wanted to kick him out. Legally the army had no choice but to keep him.
So he went off to war against the Japanese in Okinawa were he served as a medic. He didn't carry a gun at all. But he ended up saving 75 people. What a great story.
And, wow, Mel Gibson really knows his violence. The war scence were terrific. Not as graphic as Braveheart but very intense and realistic.
Vince Vaughn was a surprise casting. He played the Boot Camp company commander. Andrew Garfield was really good.
This movie may be categorized as a " faith based " movie but you don't have to be religious to like this movie. It doesnt proselitize. It simply tells the story of this young man's struggle between his beliefs and his experience in the army.
One of the best war movies ever.
