"MANILA, Philippines Budget Secretary Benjamin Diokno said that the government would not be able to fulfill President Dutertes commitment to double the basic salary of state forces in his first year in office but assured that uniformed personnel will have a monthly 20 kilo rice subsidy from the NFA, saying the P3.35-trillion proposed budget for 2017 did not include allocation for such purpose.
Mr. Dutertes vow to increase the gross pay of personnel of the Philippine National Police and the Armed Forces of the Philippines was an integral part of his campaign during the May 9 elections, which he anchored on a no-nonsense approach to solving crimes.
The President said providing better compensation to law enforcement agents would discourage them from engaging in unlawful activities like protecting illegal drug syndicates.
He even dangled cash reward of as much as P5 million to policemen who would kill big-time drug lords.
However, Diokno said the realization of the Presidents campaign promise may have to be on the back burner for the meantime as the government would have to address other pressing financial issues besetting the PNP and the AFP.
